Steamed Veggie and Fruit Blends for Toddlers: Nutritious and Delicious
When it comes to feeding our little ones, we want to ensure they get a healthy, well-balanced diet. One way I like to achieve this is by preparing steamed veggies blended with fruits and healthy fats. Not only is it a convenient option for busy parents, but it’s also a great way to introduce diverse flavors and essential nutrients to toddlers.
To start off, select a variety of vegetables for steaming, excluding items like celery and cucumbers, which are not suitable for steaming. After steaming the veggies the night before, store them in the fridge to retain their freshness.
In the morning, I combine the steamed vegetables with fruits, healthy fats, and sometimes fortified mixes for added nutritional benefits. When possible, prioritize the sourcing and quality of ingredients, especially when it comes to organic produce and items from the Dirty Dozen list.
Here are a few blend ideas to try:
-
Blend one banana, a handful of berries, iron-fortified baby cereal, avocado, flax seeds, and spinach for a nutrient-packed meal.
-
Combine banana, pear, broccoli, cucumber, celery, oats, raw cashews, and chia seeds for a balanced blend.
-
Opt for a mix of apple, strawberries, avocado, rainbow chard, walnuts, and gluten-free oats for a flavorful combination.
-
Experiment with bananas, mixed berries, iron-fortified baby cereal, flax seeds, cauliflower, and sweet potatoes for a diverse blend.
As for consistency, I don’t measure the exact quantity of each ingredient. Instead, I rely on tasting the blend to ensure it’s palatable for the child. It’s important to achieve a texture that is not too watery or too thick, ensuring it can be easily poured into a food pouch or feeder.
Start simple
For those concerned about creating the perfect blend, start with simple combinations like banana and kale, and gradually introduce new ingredients. Remember, half the fun is in experimenting to find the ideal mix that your little one enjoys.
By providing nutrient-rich, organic blends, parents can rest assured that their toddlers are getting the best start to a healthy lifestyle.
Here’s a bonus: he’s enjoying “nice cream” from a bowl and learning to use a spoon. I even had to use two bibs for my sweet, messy, adorable street-fighter 🧿
