Despite accomplishments or outward appearances, many grapple with this uneasy feeling, which can harm relationships and overall wellbeing. It’s a common problem, yet compassion and understanding often elude us in our interactions with others. It’s crucial to recognize that the people with whom we argue may be struggling with their own insecurities, regardless of their status or achievements. The most confident-seeming individuals are often the most insecure. Developing compassion and understanding for this universal struggle is essential for fostering better connections and a healthier society.

Insecurities can impact people from all walks of life, but it’s crucial to understand that they do not define your worth. Having once struggled with shyness and self-doubt, I have learned to utilize mindfulness techniques to prevent insecurity from dictating who I am. It’s essential to note that while suppressing emotions is not recommended, altering your behaviour can positively influence your thoughts and emotions. It’s easy to fall into the trap of self-doubt and diminished self-worth, since we live in a system that defines success with productivity, and defines productivity in an embarrassingly limited (and limiting!) way. One effective strategy to combat these negative feelings is to acknowledge and document our daily accomplishments. Drawing inspiration from David Burns’ seminal work “Feeling Good,” I recently suggested this approach to a colleague who was struggling with self-doubt, and the results were remarkable.

By encouraging clients to document their daily accomplishments, from the mundane to the significant, I have observed a shift their perception of productivity which boosted their confidence. The act of writing down their achievements not only serve as a tangible record of their capabilities but also provides a visual reinforcement of their efforts.

It’s essential for you to celebrate even the smallest achievements, such as sticking to a diet or taking a leisurely walk.
