The quest for longevity and vitality has captivated humanity for centuries. From the alchemists’ pursuit of the mythical elixir of life to modern-day medicine’s race to find the secrets of graceful ageing, our desire to live longer, healthier lives has remained a driving force. While contemporary approaches often focus on rigid diets, synthetic supplements, or quick fixes, Ayurveda, one of the world’s oldest systems of healthcare, offers a more holistic and sustainable path to rejuvenation.
Ayurveda, rooted in the ancient wisdom of India, holds a profound vision of longevity – one that transcends merely extending life and instead focuses on enabling a life lived with intention, purpose, and profound joy. At its core lies the concept of rasayana, or rejuvenation therapy, which aims to restore the body’s innate vitality and youthfulness through a multi-faceted approach.
Rasayana therapy encompasses a range of purification techniques, lifestyle practices, and, most notably, the use of potent herbal formulations. These herbs, nature’s gifts to us, are revered for their ability to nourish and renew every layer of our being, from the physical to the subtlest realms of consciousness. They are carefully selected and combined based on their unique properties, creating synergistic blends that work in harmony with the body’s innate intelligence.
One of the key principles of rasayana therapy is the recognition that true rejuvenation can only occur when our lifestyle is in harmony with nature, and our actions uplift and purify our body and mind. It’s a holistic approach that addresses the root causes of imbalance, rather than merely masking symptoms with temporary fixes. By aligning our daily routines, dietary choices, and mindset with the rhythms of nature, we create an environment conducive to optimal health and longevity.
Among the countless rejuvenating herbs in Ayurveda’s vast pharmacopoeia, a few stand out as true powerhouses.
5 Ayurvedic Herbs for Rejuvenation
Guduchi (Tinospora cordifolia): Renowned as the “protector of the body” and “herb for immortality,” guduchi is a potent blood purifier and immune booster, supporting healthy joints, liver function, and a radiant complexion. Its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties make it a versatile tonic for overall well-being, promoting vitality and resilience at a cellular level.
Amalaki (Emblica officinalis): Often referred to as the “wonder berry,” amalaki is a rasayana for all bodily tissues, strengthening the nervous system, improving memory, and supporting balanced digestion and elimination. Rich in vitamin C and other nutrients, it is believed to promote longevity and maintain youthful vitality by nourishing the body’s cells and tissues, and enhancing their ability to regenerate and repair.
Guggulu (Commiphora mukul): With its powerful scraping action, Guggulu promotes joint comfort, supports bone health, and aids in detoxification and weight management. It is particularly beneficial for those seeking relief from inflammatory conditions and metabolic imbalances that can contribute to premature ageing and degenerative diseases.
Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica): Known as the “brain tonic,” Gotu Kola enhances cognitive function, concentration, and mental acuity, while also promoting a relaxed mind and sound sleep. Its ability to improve circulation and reduce anxiety makes it a valuable ally for overall mental and emotional well-being, crucial components of a fulfilling and vibrant life.
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera): Living up to its name, which means “strength of ten horses,” Ashwagandha is a revered adaptogen that supports a healthy stress response, enhances energy and vitality, and promotes overall well-being. It is particularly beneficial for those experiencing burnout, fatigue, or weakened immunity, conditions that can accelerate ageing and leave us vulnerable to chronic diseases. Along with Gotu Kola, ashwagandha is one of my favourites to keep in my pantry.
These are just a few examples of the powerful rejuvenating herbs that Ayurveda has to offer. When combined with the principles of purification, diet and lifestyle alignment, and personalized guidance from an Ayurvedic nutritionist, these herbs can unlock the fountain of youth within, allowing you to experience the fullness of life with vibrant health and profound joy.
Why I incorporate Prolon FMD into my (Ayurvedic) lifestyle
While Ayurveda’s wisdom offers a holistic approach to longevity, modern science has also illuminated the potential benefits of routines that “my people” have been practising for hundreds of years, such as fasting. Research has shown that prolonged fasting promotes stress resistance, and alternating fasting with a nutrient-rich diet can extend lifespan.
One approach that has gained significant attention is the Fasting Mimicking Diet (FMD), developed by researchers at the Longevity Institute of the University of Southern California and L-Nutra Inc. The FMD mimics the effects of fasting while providing the body with essential nutrients, minimizing the burden of prolonged fasting.
In a groundbreaking study, researchers found that the FMD decreased the size of multiple organs and systems, which was followed by an elevated number of progenitor and stem cells, promoting regeneration upon refeeding. Remarkably, a 2017 study found that FMD reduced markers/risk factors for ageing and age-related diseases. Regular FMD cycles starting at middle age extend longevity, lower visceral fat, reduce cancer incidence and skin lesions, rejuvenate the immune system, and retard bone mineral density loss.
Furthermore, another study found that FMD cycles promoted hippocampal neurogenesis (the formation of new neurons in the brain), lowered IGF-1 levels and PKA activity (factors associated with ageing), elevated NeuroD1 (a protein involved in neuronal development), and improved cognitive performance. These findings suggest that FMD may have profound effects on brain health and cognitive function, even in ageing individuals, potentially staving off neurodegenerative diseases and age-related cognitive decline.
In a pilot clinical trial, three FMD cycles decreased risk factors and biomarkers for ageing, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer without major adverse effects. This provides support for using FMDs to promote healthspan—the period of life spent in good health, free from debilitating chronic conditions.
The Fasting Mimicking Diet is at the core of the health benefits of Prolon products. The 5-Day Program nourishes the body while keeping its metabolism and cells in fasting mode, thereby harvesting the health benefits of fasting while consuming plant-based, clean, premium nutrition. It is a revolutionary approach that combines the ancient wisdom of fasting with modern scientific advancements, offering a practical and sustainable way to incorporate the benefits of fasting into our daily lives.
Prolon’s FMD Plan is now independently tested in over 32 human trials conducted at 18 university research centres, such as Stanford, Mayo Clinic, University of Miami, University of Indiana, University of Genoa, Leiden University, Heidelberg University, University of Palermo, and many others. These studies have explored the applications of FMD in longevity, disease prevention, and remission of conditions like diabetes, cancer, cardiovascular disease, and inflammation. The promising results have helped tremendously in furthering Prolon’s leadership in Nutrition for Longevity and Food as Medicine, demonstrating significant life-changing benefits.
I have personally experienced the benefits of the Prolon FMD twice, and both times were simply wonderful experience. During these periods, I noticed improved mental clarity, increased energy levels, and a general sense of well-being. Especially after the second round, my skin had improved. After completing the FMD cycles, I felt rejuvenated, as if my body had undergone a deep cleanse and reset. Though it was not easy, I can promise you that it becomes easier with every round- and the results were so wonderful that I’ve decided to repeat this practice every month.
